blessing the year & the baby

to put an excitable punctuation on our holiday season,
we blessed our Erin at church on the first day of the year.

Chup cradled her, white-swaddled, and with family surrounding
he blessed her to be kind
strong
and have knowledge unto wisdom.

from my seat in the congregation,
under my breath
i added a blessing of my own.

please bless her to have blue eyes.

just one baby with eyes like mine, is that so wrong?



of course, if my blessing is not sticky
and she ends up with the rich chestnut eyes of the others
i will  be entire powerless
to love her

all the same.
