Thoughts on Nie

It's been less than twenty-four hours since we received word that Stephanie and Christian were in an airplane crash. We met together as siblings today and had a family prayer. Blessings were given and energies renewed. We're focused on the children and the healing of our darling sister and her husband.

We know that Heavenly Father knows us. We know he has a plan for each of us, that includes the sweet moments and the tragedies. We know that Jesus Christ is the center of that plan. That through his atonement we can be perfected. We are blessed to know that through the restoration of the gospel we are a forever family. This is the truth.

Your thoughts and prayers are so much appreciated. I'll do my best to keep everyone updated on the recovery. We have hope that Nie will be back to her lovely life, making her famous chocolate chip cookies and laughing at her adorable children.

Love,
c jane

I think I speak for many when I say her blog gave many a renewed love of motherhood and family life. I've felt sick all day and realized deep down it was because of the news yesterday. I am praying for the best possible outcome. The Lord is merciful.

The newspaper said they are in critical condition. Is this true?

One Mesa man died and a husband and wife were severely injured in a plane crash in Northeast Arizona Saturday afternoon.

At 3:54 p.m. a C-177 Cardinal Cessna, a small passenger plane, crashed shortly after take-off from St. Johns Airport, said Greg Martin, St. Johns City Manager.

St. Johns is approximately 50 miles northeast of Show Low.

The plane was returning from Grants, N.M. to Mesa, said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. Shortly after departure, the engine stalled and the plane struck a utility power line before crashing into a wood pile in a residential neighborhood, Martin said.

All three passengers were critically injured and airlifted to Maricopa Burn Center in Phoenix, Martin said. The pilot and certified flight instructor, Doug Kinneard died Sunday from his injuries.

The plane's other occupants, Christian and Stephanie Nielson of Mesa, are in critical condition. The Nielsons have four small children.

According to the FAA, the plane was manufactured in 1968 and is registered to Southwest American Woodworks LLC in Phoenix.

Ah C-for what it's worth..you and you're sweet family are in our prayers. You do have a HUGE support system and I know that the right thing will happen, whatever that may be and clarity will be given. Love to you!

It sounds like a significant portion of their injuries are burn-related. Unfortunately I know the meaning of serious large-scale burns and the painfully slow recovery process all too well. I imagine there were other injuries from impact and smoke inhalation too.

I can't imagine how hard this will be on the kids. Serious burns like that cause blistering and sloughing and swelling that make a person unrecognizable for months.

Please please keep us posted on the family. I know it is a very personal and painful time for the family, but Nie has always been so completely open about her life and her feelings that there are so many of us who have become so very emotionally invested in her family. We are on the edges of our seats and waiting to be given something to do.

If you or someone else in here real-life circle were able to start a collection for letters to Nie or for financial donation to the family, I'm sure we'd all jump at the chance to DO something rather than sit and wait.

Thanks for thinking of us.

My thoughts have been on all of you today. Checking the site several times an hour hoping to get more info and hopefully good news.

And I can't get it out of my mind that Christian must be sick with worry about his Steph and her pain. As she is I am sure worried about his.
They're just like that.

Oh c jane, thank you so much for the updates. I do not know you or your family personally, but I just recently started reading Nie's blog and cannot help but to be inspired by her family's beautiful life. I cannot even imagine the physical and emotional pain that all of you must be going through right now.

Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I wish Christian and Nie a full recovery so that you can all continue to enjoy your lives. I think you said it perfectly. Heavenly Father's plan for us may not make sense right now, but everything happens for a reason. The tragedies help us to enjoy the good times even more. This too shall pass, and I wish you and your family many more beautiful years.

Please keep the updates coming as often as you can. You must be very busy, but I think many of us are very eager to help however we can. I feel very helpless right now, and wish there was something that I could do for you and your family. Please don't hesitate to ask for help.

Again, I thank you for the updates. How thoughtful of you to think of all of us at this difficult time. Just know that your family is in the thoughts and prayers of many, many people. You are all greatly loved.

It's amazing how connected you can feel to someone without ever meeting them face-to-face.

After reading this today, I stopped immediately & said a short prayer to give comfort & peace to the whole family, and that life as usual can resume soon.

I will continue praying. Can't wait to hear of their speedy recovery.

I do not know any of you personally, but the beauty, warmth, and brilliance that Nie exudes via the web is so comforting. I know her light, and that of her husbands will not be extinguished. ST. JOHNS, ARIZ. - A local family is torn apart by a plane crash.

One person died in the collision in St. Johns but one Valley couple, who are parents to four children, made it through alive.

3TV spoke to a relative of the survivors on Monday. Family members are looking after Stephanie and Christian Nielson’s children while they are at Maricopa Medical Center. The couple is in critical condition with their bodies covered in severe burns.

Family members say they were taken aback by their current condition in the burn unit.

While they are unable to speak, Stephanie and Christian understand their family members are by their sides.

Christian had just gotten his pilots license but it is not clear who was at the controls when the plane crashed. The Nielsons and another pilot had stopped to refuel their plane on the way back from New Mexico. They took off from an airport in St. Johns when family members say the engine died and the plane crash landed in a neighborhood. No one on the ground was injured.

Family members are relieved the couple's children, who often flew alongside their parents, did not go on this trip.

Christian developed a passion for flying. He reportedly jumped for joy when Stephanie bought him flight lessons for his birthday two years ago.

This has been a heartbreaking turn of events for the family who says their strong Mormon faith is helping. The family is now bracing for months of recovery and follow-up surgeries.

St. Johns police say Doug Kinneard was the other pilot in the plane who died after the crash. According to a flight website, he had been flying for 25 years and was a flight instructor in Mesa since 2002.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

I have thought about Stephanie and Christian since I heard about the crash. My tears are tears of pain on their behalf, for they are two of the most beautiful people on this earth, inside and out. I knew Steph in high school and our families were in the same ward in Provo, Utah for a while.
My heart goes out to their little children and hope that they know God is with them every step of the way. Have faith, darlings. Heavenly Father knows you and is aware of your trials at this time. To the families of Christian and Steph, please continue to have faith that all will work out as God intends. This trial is not without some kind of good to come out of it. You all with continually be in my prayers. Love you all!

A Mesa couple with four young children are fighting for their lives in a Valley burn center after their small plane crashed over the weekend near St. Johns in eastern Arizona.

A third person on the C-177 Cardinal Cessna, Doug Kinneard, died Sunday, a day after the crash, from his injuries.

Christian Nielson, a licensed pilot, and his wife Stephanie Nielson, are in critical condition at the Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center. According to family members, Stephanie has burns over 80 percent of her body; her husband is burned over 30 percent of his.

"We want prayers. We could use all the prayers we could get for them and their children," said Courtney Kendrick, Stephanie's sister.

The Nielsons were flying back to Mesa from Grants, N.M., where they were on a weekend trip to a ranch Christian Nielson family owns in the area.

The accident happened shortly after the plane took off after refueling just before 4 p.m. Saturday from the airport in St. Johns, about 50 miles northeast of Show Low. Authorities said the engine stalled and the plane struck a utility power line before crashing into a wood pile in a residential neighborhood.

Kinneard was a licensed pilot and flight instructor who often flew out of Falcon Field in Mesa. It is still unclear who was at the controls, but St. Johns city manager Greg Martin said authorities believe it was Kinneard.

Kinneard worked as a public information officer for Boeing Co. in Mesa and has been a licensed pilot since 1983. According to his Web site, he has been a flight instructor at Falcon Field since 2002, teaching flying part time on nights and weekends.

The Nielson's four children, ages 6, 5, 3, and 1, are staying with relatives. Stephanie's sisters flew in from Utah Monday to help care for the children.

Kendrick said Stephanie was a committed mother who "made it into a career, always crafting with the kids and making special meals for them."

Kendrick said the older children are aware their parents are in the hospital.

Kendrick said the family plans to post updates on her blog, http://cjanerun.com

According to the FAA, the plane was manufactured in 1968 and is registered to Southwest American Woodworks LLC in Phoenix.

This is Christian's cousin with a brief update:

As of 4pm today, both Christian and Stephanie have been moved from trauma. They are no longer worried about organ function but are still concerned about the severity of the burns, so they are still in critical condition.

Hundreds were fasting for Stephanie today. It is so great to know that the power of love and faith - made manifest through prayers and fasting - have such a healing power. That God lets us manifest our love in such a way to help each other heal. Thank you for your faith, prayers, and fasting. I know that these gave Stephanie and Christian strength in the last 48 hours to make so much progress.

I know that though this will be an ongoing healing process, that for Stephanie and Christian to bear these burdens together will be a great mercy.

Please continue to pray for this family. Your prayers do make a difference!
